Cabinet finalises India's position

The Union Cabinet has discussed India's stand on climate change at the Copenhagen global summit. The Cabinet Ministers had thorough discussions on various aspects related to the developments at the global conference and marked red lines for the negotiations India will adhere to.
While refusing to take legally binding cuts, India has announced 20-25 per cent emission intensity cuts by 2020 compared to the 2005 levels as a "domestic action" to show its seriousness to curb the greenhouse gases which are responsible for global warming.
Critics have said that India announced recent carbon intensity cuts only in response to pressure from developed countries.But Shyam Saran, India's top climate negotiator, has maintained that the cuts have nothing to do with international pressure, but were part of India's larger domestic vision for low-carbon intensity growth.

If India meets the objectives laid out in the National Action Plan on Climate Change, it will be able to reduce its carbon intensity by 20 to 25 per cent by 2020, Saran has said.
