The Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) requested the Centre to keep the GST on plastic waste and beedi production under the 5-per cent slab.

In a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman ahead of a meeting of the GST Council, the SJM, an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), said reducing the current rate of 18-per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on plastic waste and 28 per cent on beedi production will help protect and promote employment in the two sectors with better welfare of the workers. A reduction in the GST rates in the two sectors will also help achieve the objective of reducing environmental pollution under Swachh Bharat, it added.
